Frequently
Asked Questions (FAQ):
Q: What should I do if I am having problems printing?
A: KanjiWORD is compatible with standard Windows printers, but some of the
drivers for those printers may not perform properly. We have been able to
solve nearly all printing problems by recommending changing the printer
driver or printer options. Click here for
details and solutions.
Q: Why do I see "illegal operation" when using KanjiWORD
3.0 with WinFax?
A: Check the WinFax driver's properties from Start, Settings, Printers
section. There should be a Graphics tab as part of the properties. If
there is not one, the Fax driver is not completely installed. It may work
with MS-Word because it is a simple text transmission, but KW3 files are
sent as a graphic when faxed. Either try to install the WinFax driver
again, or use Microsoft Fax that comes with Win95.
Q: What should I do when I see the error "GPF in gdi.exe"?
A: This may have to do with a conflict in the display driver or an
incomplete printer driver installation. Try changing the display settings
to the VGA driver. You can do this from the Program Managar, Main Program
Group, and Windows Setup icon. You should see the driver next to Display.
To change, choose Change System Settings from the Options menu and select
VGA. Then click OK, Current, and Restart Windows buttons. (Or from Control
Panel, Display in Win95) The other possibility is a conflict with the
default printer selected. Try selecting another printer driver or fax
driver as default from the Control Panel, Printers option or Print
Manager. If you don't have another driver to choose from, just install a
generic driver such as Epson LQ-1500.
Q: What should I do when I see the error "Mailbox index is
corrupted"?
A: The problem is caused when you receive an email that contains more than
254 characters in the TO: line of the message. This normally means that
the message was sent to numerous people besides the recipient. This may
also happen if there are too many characters in the CC: field. The simple
solution is to close Kmail, rename c:\kword3\mailbox\mailbox.idx to
c:\kword3\mailbox\mailbox.txt, then open Kmail. Opening Kmail will
automatically create a new mailbox.idx if it doesn't find one at
c:\kword3\mailbox\. This option does not allow the user to display any of
the emails that were in the Inbox before the error occured.
Q: Why do I see the error "General Protection Fault in module
outlui.dll"?
A: This usually occurs because there are two copies of the "outlui.dll"
in the system. Search for that file. Rename the copy that is not in KWORD3
directory and try again. If you find that the other application that was
using that file no longer works, try putting kword3 in the path statement
in autoexec.bat, so the other app. will use the outlui.dll located in the
kword3 directory. The easiest way to edit autoexec.bat is to click, Start,
Run, type SysEdit and press OK. Save the file when finished, then restart
your computer.
Q: Is there Bold or Italics for the Japanese fonts in KanjiWORD?
A: No, since having bold or italic would require another font, it is not
possible to use Bold or Italic attributes for any of the KanjiWORD
Japanese fonts. For a change in style, we recommend Underline (U) or
Shading (S). Also, you can use Mincho for standard and Gothic for Bold.
Q: What if the first letter of the Japanese symbol I'm typing
doesn't come out?
A: When the FEP is active and you are still converting hiragana to kanji,
the characters will be highlighted in yellow, green or blue. In order to
accept the kanji as shown, you must push the Enter key. If you forget to
push the Enter key and there are characters highlighted, then the next key
pushed will act as the Enter key and accept your kanji choices. For
example, if you forget to push the Enter key and begin the next sentence
with
, the N will serve as the Enter key and only
the
will show up on the screen. This may also
happen when your typing speed is very quick and the amount of RAM you have
does not allow the characters in the buffer to be selected quickly.
Q: What if the yellow highlight will not disappear after I have
pushed the Enter key?
A: Occasionally the difference in your monitor frequency and the speed of
your keyboard selection will create a conflict that causes the yellow
highlight to remain on. There are two ways to fix this. 1. Highlight all
the text that is yellow PLUS two characters behind the yellow and delete
that block of text. This method results in a loss of your entered text. 2.
Highlight all the text that is yellow and select the S button on the menu
bar to shade the text, then select the N button on the menu bar to change
to normal text. This method prevents the loss of entered text.
Q: What if I get an underline added when saving a file in .BMP
graphic format?
A: When saving only a few lines of text as BMP Graphics, some display
types will cause an extra underline to appear on the .BMP file. To
alleviate this problem, save the text as PCX Graphics instead.
Q: What if I open a .PCX or .BMP file saved from KanjiWORD in
Paintbrush (Paint) and it's all black?
A: Some video drivers conflict with Paintbrush and the graphics files
created by KanjiWORD. If you have a more advanced Images/drawing program,
there is usually no problem displaying these files. If you only use
Paintbrush, you can change the video driver you are using (see Video
Display Compatibility Tip below).
Q: Do you have any General Video Display Compatibility Tips?
A: If possible, changing your display driver to VGA, Super VGA 800x600 16
colors or a compatible driver should allow KanjiWORD to run without
problems. To change the display driver, use the Window Setup program, in
the Program Manager's Main group. Consult Windows On-line Help in Windows
Setup (How to Change System Settings) if you are unsure how to complete
this operation.
Q: How can I change the default English and Japanese font and size
in KanjiWORD?
A: If you want to use a different font or size as the default, you can
change them be editing the KWORD3.INI file in the KWORD directory of you
hard drive. To edit the KWORD3.INI file, simply double click on the file
in File Manager and remember to save the changes when you are finished.
Add the following lines with no spaces, under the [Editor] section of
KWORD3.INI:
Defaultfont=Times, Roman, Times New Roman
DefaultKanjifont=Kanji Mincho
Defaultfontsize=12
You can replace Times, Roman, Times New Roman, Kanji Mincho, and 12
with whatever your preferences are.
Q: What if I get an error message that says: Cannot find TOOLHLP.DLL?
A: For some reason the file TOOLHLP.DLL is missing from the SYSTEM
subdirectory of the Windows directory on you hard drive. This file is
necessary to run KanjiWORD and is a part of the Windows operating system.
If you have another computer with Windows installed, you may simply copy
the TOOLHLP.DLL file from the other computer to the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
directory of the original computer. If you do not have access to another
computer, you must re-install Windows to restore that file. (Re-installing
Windows does not cause loss of data, it simply overwrites the current
files in the Windows directory.)
Q: What if I have problems importing text files from the shareware
product JWP?
A: JWP files do not contain the standard carriage return-line feed (CR/LF)
characters at the end of each line, but contain only the line feed (LF)
character, which is normally standard only for UNIX-based files/ The
problem is that there are no carriage returns in the JWP files and
KanjiWORD can only handle a paragraph size of about 27 lines. There are no
options available within JWP to change the format, but there are a number
of freeware or shareware utilities that will solve the problem and allow
you to import JWP files. A good one is called CRLF.EXE, which is available
from many places on the Internet (just search the Net).
Q: Why can't I open my old KW3 files after installing a new printer
on my system?
A: If you are planning to install a new printer on your computer, we
recommend leaving the old printer driver on your system as well. Just set
your new printer as default and all should be well. If you want to delete
the older printer driver, make sure you open your old KW3 files and save
them after you have selected your new default printer. Once you have saved
all of your old documents, you can remove your old printer driver. If you
remove it before saving your files, KanjiWORD may not be able to read
those files because the old printer information is saved in the file.
Q: Why can't I open a KanjiWORD file I created at home from my
office computer?
A: If you don't have the same printer driver installed at work as you do
at home, the file will not open because it is looking for that printer
driver to be available in Windows. To solve this, just install the same
printer driver at work that you are using at home from the Control Panel,
Printers option.
Q: Why do I get "Error in Saving File/ File Already in
Use" messages?
A: You need to add the Share command to Autoexec.bat. Be sure to place
near the top of file, maybe after path statement. Some users who bought
computers with Win95 pre-installed may not have an autoexec.bat. Just
create one as a text file on the rooth directory (c:\) and place the text
"share.exe" there. In Windows95, share is located in the
c:\windows\command\share.exe directory. The easiest way to edit
autoexec.bat is to click, Start, Run, type SysEdit and press OK. Save the
file when finished, then restart your computer.
Q: What if I have a problem using KanjiWORD that is not listed here?
A: Please contact PSP's via phone (425-957-0808),
via email (tech@pspinc.com).
